What is the difference between 8/4, 8/6, and 8/8 Cotton?

The numbers used to describe these cotton yarns tell you two things: the thickness of the individual threads and how many of those threads are spun together to create the final yarn strand.

Essentially, the higher the second number, the thicker the yarn! Here is a breakdown of how they compare:

• 🧶 8/4 Cotton: Made of 4 threads spun together. It is a Fingering/Sock weight (US) or 3-ply yarn (UK). This is our top recommendation for amigurumi patterns! It is also fantastic for light summer clothing, tote bags, and delicate dishcloths.

• 🧶 8/6 Cotton: Made of 6 threads spun together. It is a Sport weight (US) or 4-ply yarn (UK). It sits right in the middle, making it incredibly versatile for summer garments, home decor, and slightly larger amigurumi projects.

• 🧶 8/8 Cotton: Made of (you guessed it!) 8 threads spun together. It is a DK weight (US) or 8-ply yarn (UK). Because it is double the thickness of 8/4, it is best suited for sturdy potholders, thick dishcloths, blankets, and cozy garments.
