Judith Jelena Paus, a DIY expert and macramé designer, is here to share the magic of knotting with you. Whether you’re picking up your first piece of rope or perfecting your technique, Judith Jelena will help you get started. 🧶💛
What is Macramé?
Macramé is the art of tying knots to create something beautiful. You can make everything from wall hangings, plant hangers, and keychains, to larger pieces like blankets and bags. 🌿✨
For those new to the craft, Judith Jelena describes it as a wonderfully relaxing and meditative process.
"The process of tying knots has a calming effect – it helps you slow down, disconnect from everyday stress, and focus completely on the creative moment," she explains.
Macramé isn’t just about making something with your hands; it’s about finding joy in the rhythm and simplicity of the technique. Whether you’re crafting small projects or large decorative pieces, macramé allows you to unwind and enjoy the creative journey.

Getting Started with Macramé
Choosing the Right Yarn
Now that you have a better understanding of what macramé is, you’re probably wondering how to get started. A great place to begin is by choosing the right macramé yarn or rope. According to Judith Jelena, selecting the right material is key to a successful start.
"In my patterns, I always recommend a suitable yarn to make it easy to get started. But of course, it really depends on the kind of result you want to achieve," she explains.
“For more delicate or detailed projects, a finer yarn works best – just keep in mind it might take a bit more time. For larger or bold pieces, thicker yarns are usually the better choice.”
If you’re a beginner, Judith Jelena recommends opting for thicker yarns, like Hobbii Recycled Cotton Rope 5 mm. Not only does this make the knots more visible, but it also speeds up the process, making your first macramé project easier and more enjoyable.

Essential Tools for Getting Started with Macramé
In addition to choosing the right yarn, having the right tools is essential for a smooth macramé experience. Judith Jelena recommends a few basic tools that will make your crafting process easier, especially if you're just starting out.
“I’m a big fan of blocking mats,” she says. “A blocking mat will keep your project in place and prevent it from shifting around while you work. Especially for beginners, this makes it easier to focus on pulling the knots evenly.”

Another important tool is a good pair of fabric scissors. Judith Jelena explains, "A sharp pair of fabric scissors also makes a huge difference and helps the whole process feel much smoother."

Mastering the Basic Macramé Knots: A Beginner’s Guide
Now that you have your yarn and tools ready, it’s time to dive into the heart of macramé: knotting! Judith Jelena recommends starting with the most basic knot: the lark’s head knot. This knot is essential for attaching your yarn to the project and is the foundation for many macramé patterns. Once you've got that down, the square knot is an excellent next step. It's simple to learn and incredibly versatile, perfect for creating a wide variety of macramé designs.
The double half hitch knot is another fundamental knot, and although it may seem tricky at first, Judith Jelena reassures us that once you get the hang of it, it’s actually quite simple!
When it comes to keeping your knots consistent and neat, she reminds us that it’s all about practice. "Consistency comes with time," she says. “But the good news is: you’ll get a feel for it really quickly. After just a few knots, your hands start to understand the tension, and it all becomes more natural.”
So don’t worry if it feels a bit challenging at first – keep practicing, and soon you’ll be knotting like a pro!

Macramé Patterns for Beginners
If you’re new to macramé and wondering where to start, Judith Jelena has some suggestions for easy patterns that will help you build your skills and confidence.
"I recommend starting with something simple, like my fruit net or the basic shopping net pattern," she says. "These projects are primarily based on the square knot, which is one of the easiest knots to learn."
Choosing simple projects like these allows you to see quick progress, making the learning process enjoyable and rewarding. Once you’ve mastered the basics, you can move on to more intricate patterns.
